Spit in the Ocean

Years ago, when I was in my very late teens and early twenties, I ran with a group of “kids” who would all congregate at the home of one of the group.  Her mother, Ma, opened her home to us as a place to gather.  We often played poker, and one of the games that we would sometimes play was “Spit in the Ocean.”  Five cards were dealt each player, then the next card would be turned up, and it was wild, as were any others of the same number or face in the player’s hand.  It is a game that is bold and daring.

In an episode of “Dynasty” or “Dallas,” I’m not sure which, the term “Spit in the Ocean” was used in reference to an action soon to be taken by one of the characters.  It was action that was bold and daring.

Philippians 4:19:

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”

2 Corinthians 3:4,5:

“Such confidence we have through Christ before God. Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God.”

The brutal truth of First Presbyterian Church of Battle Creek, is that our numbers have declined.  We have been sent and we have called a new pastor who is bold and daring.  He is blowing our collective hair back.  With his direction, First Presbyterian Church of Battle Creek is embarking on an outreach program which is a bit akin to “Spit in the Ocean.”  It is bold and it is daring.  Our confidence and competence comes from our God.

Prayer: Lord, we ask guidance and strength as we do your work in this community. Amen.
