Facing Trials

“Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal which comes upon you to prove you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when His glory is revealed.” 1 Peter 4: 12-13

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

“Count it all joy, my brethren, when you meet various trials, because the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” James 1: 2, 12

“Rejoice in your hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.” Romans 12:12

Most of us have figured out– and indeed are living proof– that Christians are in no way
exempt from life’s trials and tribulations. Some might even wonder if we are “put to the test”
beyond what nonbelievers experience. We can relate to phrases like “fiery ordeal.” Maybe
you’ve been through a loss that is so agonizing you identify with the idea of “crucifixion of the
heart.” Or maybe you are struggling with a chronic form of suffering that you live with day after day, that chafes at your morale and patience.

So many sermons and whole books have been written on this subject that a single short
devotional can only scratch the surface. But perhaps there is comfort in considering in this
moment that through trials God teaches us about our need for Him, unites us with Jesus, grows our endurance and steadfastness, and grants us hope and peace. He brings us to the other side of our acute or chronic pain, in His time, as we remain constant in prayer.
“By affliction He teaches us many precious lessons, which otherwise we would never learn. By
affliction He shows us our emptiness and weakness, draws us to the throne of grace, purifies
our affections, weans us from the world, and makes us long for heaven.” J. C. Ryle

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank you and praise you for your perfect plan, through which we grow stronger in faith as we deal with trials. Thank you for shepherding us through difficulties and for the promise of being with You forever. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
