Luke 1:46-55

THE SONG OF MARY
A recent popular Christmas ballad is “Mary, Did You Know?” The lyrics remind us of what an honor it was for such a humble, quiet woman to have been selected to bear the promised Savior. Decades before that song was written, another special song, found in Luke 1:46-55, was written by the mother of Jesus, the “Song of Mary”. One of the most beautiful songs in the Bible, Mary sings these words as she prepares to be the mother of the promised Savior.

Mary felt honored by God to be chosen for such an honor, yet rather than feeling any praise due to her, she chose to thank God for his gift. She knew that although the focus was on her as the mother of our savior, she still focused all her praise towards God. Many of today’s songs focus more on us, but in her song, it seems as if Mary was saying to God, “It’s all about you.”
As you read these words of Mary, let us respect her, thank her and thank God for her, but not to worship her. Instead, as Mary did, let us focus on God and all that he has done for us.

Prayer
Father God, thank you selecting a humble, gentle woman to bear your son. Thank you for Mary, and for Mary’s Song. And thank you for this reminder that it really is “all about you”. AMEN.
