SUMMARY:Adult Book Study
DESCRIPTION:“The Seventeen Traditions; Lessons from an American Childhood” by Ralph Nader\nThis adult book study will be led by Nathan Martens following Sunday morning worship services. Don’t let the author’s name scare you away. This is a different side of Ralph Nader. He discusses the traditional family values he was raised with. \n“In these pages\, I have tried to capture some of my family’s traditions as I recall them today. . . . Such family traditions challenge the notion that the fads\, technologies\, how-to manuals\, and addictions of modern life have somehow taken the place of the time-tested wisdom fashioned in the crucibles of earlier generations.” \nSo writes Ralph Nader in the opening of this delightful and surprising book. Known for his lifetime of activism\, Nader looks back in these page to his serene and enriching childhood in small-town Connecticut to reconnect with seventeen key traditions—from listening to learning\, patriotism to argument\, work to simple enjoyment—that he absorbed from his parents\, his siblings\, and his community. Warmly human\, rich with sensory memories and lasting wisdom\, it offers a modern-day parable of how we grow from children into responsible adults—a reminder of how family and friends can teach us how to live in a civil society. \n\nThe Tradition of Listening\nThe Tradition of the Family Table\nThe Tradition of Health\nThe Tradition of History\nThe Tradition of Scarcity\nThe Tradition of Sibling Equality\nThe Tradition of Education and Argument\nThe Tradition of Discipline\nThe Tradition of Simple Enjoyments\nThe Tradition of Reciprocity\nThe Tradition of Independent Thinking\nThe Tradition of Charity\nThe Tradition of Work\nThe Tradition of Business\nThe Tradition of Patriotism\nThe Tradition of Solitude\nThe Tradition of Civics\n\nCome and explore some family traditions that examine the value of gaining knowledge and learning to think\, among several other things. It’s a common sense book that you’ll be able to relate to and appreciate. \n  \n*Please note: The dates for this class are tentative at this time\, but will be close to the dates listed. Watch the bulletin and Carillon for changes in the dates.

SUMMARY:Adult Book Study "Being Mortal" by Atul Gawande
DESCRIPTION:This adult book study will take place on Sunday mornings following worship services. It will be led by our Parish Nurse\, Jeanne Hickman. She has experience working with people in the final stages of their lives. Through the author and the leadership of Jeanne\, you will examine some choices for dealing with end of life decisions. \n“Medicine has triumphed in modern times\, transforming birth\, injury\, and infectious disease from harrowing to manageable. But in the inevitable condition of aging and death\, the goals of medicine seem too frequently to run counter to the interest of the human spirit.” \nWe will all die. This book will offer some insight into dying with grace and dignity. Planning ahead on your part will ease the burden for your family and loved ones when the time comes. The author will walk you through “the talk” he had with his family members and how it helped him when the time came. \nCome and learn together. \nPlease contact Jeanne Hickman (269)965-0574 if you are interested in attending this class and if you will need a book.
