Heritage Sunday: Mr. Rogers Before the Neighborhood

May 19, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 12:30 pm

While a college senior, Fred Rogers became “appalled by what were labeled as children’s programs.”   He wanted to enter seminary after college but instead:   “I went into television because I hated it so, and I thought there must be some way of using this fabulous instrument to nurture those who would watch and listen.”   In 1953 Mr. Rogers started his television career.  He also attended seminary classes – sometimes during  his lunch hour. In 1962 Fred Rogers was ordained into the Presbyterian Church with a charge to work with children and families through the media.  Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood began on public television in 1968.  Mr. Rogers never served a traditional pastor role but his message of acceptance  reached a congregation of millions.

Heritage Sunday is the “Celebration of Generations” at First Presbyterian.   We celebrate what Go has been doing in the lives of children, youth and adults; we re-affirm our heritage; and honor our 50 year members. Join us for this very special anniversary and a chicken pie luncheon in Fellowship Hall following the service.
